NINETEEN
The two FBI agents showed up next. They singled out Aldo, his bodyguard, Nico, Gaspar, his bodyguard, Jorge, and Natalya for interrogations. Mike insisted on sitting in. So did Neville. That meant theyâd be busy for a few hours.
I took Karin and Sophia aside. âIâm counting on both of you to protect Hunter and take care of him while Iâm gone.â
A deep male voice behind me said, âGoing somewhere, Jett?â
I turned and faced Tim. âHunterâs hangar to ask if anyone spotted someone messing with the Bücker.â
He stared at me for a beat. âIâm coming with you.â
âWhy? You think I need protecting?â
âAlways.â He smiled. âWeâll take my Hummer. Itâs bulletproof.â
I raised an eyebrow. âIâm never sure if youâre joking.â
Another smile. âLetâs go.â
His civilian tank was parked out front beside Odinâs fountain. The fifteen-foot bronze statue stood with his sword held high, surrounded by four fanged wolves, their open mouths spewing water toward the cardinal points of a compass. I climbed aboard the black behemoth.
As he drove down the long driveway, he glanced at me. âWhat are you hoping to find?â
I brought him up to speed on the suspects. âIâm hoping somebody out there will recognize one of them.â
We pulled up to the entry gate thirty minutes later. The guard looked inside the Hummer and spotted me. âHi, Miss Jorgensen. Visiting Mr. Vann today?â
âThis is my friend and security expert, Tim Goldy. Weâre stopping by the hangar to search for evidence on who sabotaged Ben Fosterâs biplane. It crashed last night.â
âOh no, is Ben okay?â
âHunter was flying it with a friend.â I gave him a few details. âDo you have a record of who passed through here the past few days?â
âSorry, we donât keep written records.â
The guard waved us through. My uncleâs hangar home faced the main runway at Aerodrome Estates. A full-time mechanic named Bill Hill worked in the shop at the back of Hunterâs flight school and aircraft maintenance facility.
âLetâs go ask his mechanic if he saw someone in the hangar the other day.â I led Tim to the repair shop.
Bill was bent over a workbench and stood after we walked in. âHey, Jett, I heard about the accident. Howâs Hunter doing?â
I filled him in. âDid you see any strangers here in the past couple of days?â
He rubbed his chin. âDay before yesterday, Hunter was away working an airline flight, and I was busy rebuilding an engine in the shop. We donât lock the doors if one of us is here. As I walked through the hangar at the end of my workday, I spotted a guy with dark hair leaving. I called to him, but he didnât stop. I rushed after him, but by the time I reached the door, he was gone.â He shrugged. âI checked the hangarâeverything looked normal.â
Tim brought up a photo of Nico on his phone and showed Bill. âDid he look like this? Heâs about five-ten.â
He studied the picture. âCould be himâsame height and hair color, but I didnât see his face.â
âWhat about this guy? Also five-ten.
